I am working on a fantastical series of angels at the moment in my own time that aren't meant to be religious, but almost comic style pieces. The armour and characters in general are over the top and very fun to design. For this one, I wanted to go with wing shapes and put six to eight on them since I think traditionally, archangels have many wings. Initially I was going to go for a rooster armour design and wing style, but it got a bit toooo colourful for my colourful liking. This is also a tribute to my brother, Michael, who has always been my angel and there for me (and also posed as the reference for this person!)

I started it last year some time so I'm not sure exactly how long it has taken, but it has been through so many incarnations, and I quit at one point as I was not happy with the various designs I was coming up with. The wings here ended up a bit rushed as I had to meet a deadline.
I tried not to super finish everything as I usually do. The temptation was very strong, but after some speedpaints I am gaining more confidence in just leaving lines rough. I'm not sure if it's a good deviation from my usual super sharpened look, but it was a relief not to control the shape of every single building as usual, and just do jagged lines everywhere. Also I did enjoy working in a set universe, and converting game characters to my style.

Kiss Kill (nudity)

Death or desire? Lust or adoration? Hot or cold, it's up to you, but if you're smart, you'll probably just extricate yourself very quickly.

I promised a friend, Sarah Reed, that I would paint her deviantart namesake character a few years ago, and only just remembered this promise so I started this. She is a designer in her own right, very lovely and popular and has drawn many different versions of her story character, usually in a comic style. There were also many examples drawn by friends of hers for me to peruse.

So the challenge was to translate her outfit and such into my way of drawing. One thing that stuck out to me was that this very busty Demon Queen was a very sexy thing whether being violent, or, as usual, looking capricious and inviting. So these elements as well as sticking to her outfit I tried to stick to.

Initially the idea with the reapers was to have the boss one (wings) and the others emerging from the earth as in one of my idols Simon Bisley's pictures of Adam and Eve being tormented by emerging spectres. But I decided that I wanted to introduce more 'scope' with a deeper background so after redesigning it, I have them flying/emerging up behind the rock.

I was completely arbitrary in cloth direction as I really just wanted to create spirals to match the 'heavenly sword' swirling hair - I imagine the lava terrace is going in spirals too. My favourite shape. Initially there were going to be smaller hell-creatures frollicking about in the cloth to make the curlicues more viable, but they were too much. And whoever put that burning brazier in a pool of lava so it could melt and fall over is a very silly person!

Here are some close-ups I think you might be interested in. I'll talk about references after that:

Re references, I am always my own female figure reference, but there are a few things I looked at/researched for the smaller details. The brazier I referenced from a bowl we have. For the cloth I have done many studies for this project and some in the past - some of these including random people waving cloth around who do not wish to have their photos posted. Sometimes I just drape fabric over various surfaces like this to see how it all works.

My cat loves to follow me around, so whenever I pull out my favourite reference ribbon to wave around in the wind she is attacking it which can be rather irritating! But the ribbon got revenge eventually! Looks like I'm choking her but she's actually just sitting there purring :-)

For the lava I just googled 'lava' to get an idea of what it looked like. For the necklace, the original character's choker reminded me of the long-necked Padaung people, so I did look at a few pictures of those as well.

Thank you for taking the time to look and read!

Lady Mordarante

I like to illustrate my friends characters/stories when I have the time. This one is for a friend I have written with for almost ten years now >.<. She is an unseelie noble (usually I depict this with unusual symbols floating around the character, but here I thought some floating sigil and things would distract).

Overall I think it took somewhere between 20 and 30 hours. I have a new system for art now to try and minimise burn out where for personal projects at least, I cycle through several at the same time and work on them in increments. So it's hard to know for sure, not working in solid blocks on the same picture >.<

I did a huge amount of research before I began to draw this. As a note on references and how I operate--A long time ago I was pulled up on relying too heavily on any particular reference image, and so now I tend to try to refer to only very small pieces when I am really uncertain about texture or things like that. So the shape of the nose or the particular way that shadows fall from jewellry as an example of some problem areas. I also used references here for overall idea/costume design ideas etc.

For the hands, however, I did study my own hands. The face did not have a reference. I have been drawing faces for a very long time and can usually conjure those out of my mind (correct anatomy is a different issue though!) I actually took a photo of my hands with my digicam but I can't find it at the moment or I would upload it, so sorry about that!

For the bird I have vaguely drawn something like the most adorable bird in the world, the resplendant quetzal. I designed something from the aspects of the quetzal that I liked, and something of the long tailed fantastical birds that Enayla used to draw a very long time ago! Again there is no real reference for it though, just looking at several pictures.

Here are some closeups:
Anyway I just did this one really quickly for a profile on a website that I am part of. This is Tiny the very naughty imp. He loves to steal spoons and buttons and other shiny things.
As usual, sporadic photo references were used - myself for body and fan. I used a photo of Margaret Tudor from the Tudors as costume inspiration and sleeve reference). I love the costuming from that series and the raunchy yet sophisticated feel of the promo shots of Anne. I also roamed around town one day and took photos of couches and cushions for reference here...to the extent that I was given a few furniture pamphlets by sales assistants, and even a pricing guide and manufacturers details for a nice saleswoman I told I was shopping for couches. since I was so embarrassed that I was standing there taking photos of their furniture like a creep.

The windows were the most fun, and also the quickest things to make. I created one panel by pasting and colouring squares, and then pasted and skewed ad nauseum. The background and the lanterns were layered in later. The cushions I created by layering patterns over blank cushion shapes so I would not get distracted by texture/shadows etc. The paisley pattern was done in a similar way, but I do not ever want to do paisley again as faded and nearly indistinct patterns on a similar colour background are a pain (I had to keep raising and lowering the brightness to check the shape I was making).

Peraiia had also given me advice last time to define the knuckles for more elegance so I tried that this time, thanks ^.^

And here is why I do not like paisley *shudders*
Name: Rochelle Green
Country: New Zealand

Inspired by warhammer/warcraft concept art, I wanted to do an armour study. This is a dark paladin character of mine - witch, priest, and warrior, and worshipper of the death gods.

Mostly done in photoshop over a few weeks, with some textures and other parts done in painter. The face and bird I had painted from scratch a few years ago as an old sketch so I just reworked these here. Let me know if you want to see those. Warhammer concepts loosely referenced so that the look of the armour and weapons are similar (but without so many of the spikes and arrow/circle pattern designs).

I purposefully lowered the contrast on this picture, wanting it to be very close to greyscale. Let me know what you think about the less saturated colours - good? Bad?

It was done for a competition. In hindsight the competition was about stock images and therefore I should have approached it from a totally different angle and just done a photomanipulation instead of a painting with some sparse matte elements, with more focus on the stock images. Instead I used the supplied stock images of a guitar, plant and tree to create textures, for example the frets in the jagged background and the tree turned upside down and drawn all over for the island.
William Blake is one of my favourite poets of all time, and this is a project I've been working on on and off since last year, as my interpretation of the poem "A Poison Tree."

" I was angry with my friend:
I told my wrath, my wrath did end.
I was angry with my foe;
I told it not, my wrath did grow...."

The devil here is not a victim, but rather the one who planted the seed, and now is enjoying the vengeance of many a foe who has fallen beneath her tree.

Painted in photoshop/painter. I referenced myself (loosely haha) for the girl/corset etc, the original tree painting I'll upload in an attachment soon, I started this image last year and you can see a lot more of the leaves/details in the old version :-) There is also another painting I have taken the skulls from (two useless backgrounds I have mish-mashed together here) I will add some closeups also.

Your C&C much appreciated, I had some useful things to keep in mind from my last post here! Thanks everyone!
I started the background here with no intention of drawing a marilith/naga. It was initially for a demon picture ('Shatter') that I recently completed. However, I got far too absorbed in the details and when the time came to review my demon sketch, I realised he would overpower all these elements that I had put in the background. So I saved this concept for a second demon that I thought fit the mood/theme/shapes a little more.

I worked on both pictures simultaneously, and both took about 2.5 weeks to finish. I am now doing a third demon (a more mishappen one) with another throw-away background idea I sketched while I was re-doing the Shatter background. I am enjoying exploring a similar theme of...some broken world being overrun, and putting continuing elements in the pictures. My current project is to work on recurring characters/environments/themes.
And here was the original one, done about six years ago? I have upped the contrast/colour on a lot of my very old pieces, as the monitor I had at the time was terrible and I didn't realise that people were seeing these de-saturated and lacking contrast haha!
Back then I used Poser for figure references, which you can see in the stiffness of this figure. Now I use actual people for references which probably shows in the realism of my shapes - usually myself for a female character, or my brother for a male character, but sometimes I just grab whoever is close and ask them to pose for me, which can be amusing and embarrassing.
